Who Killed Heath Ledger? The truth behind the drug
The City of New York Medical Examiner's report concluded that the cause of Heath Ledger of death was "the result of acute intoxication by the surveys combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine. Recent and health warnings have focused on lethal combination of prescription drugs such as narcotic analgesics and sleeping pills. However, the medical community have ignored – and have been ignored for some time – prescription drugs underlying class that often leads to dependence on dangerous drugs usually with fatal consequences. Two of the drugs listed on the report of Heath Ledger are the most insidious, potentially dangerous, highly prescribed, and yet the most overlooked and underestimated by physicians. These drugs may trigger the chain reaction may lead to Vicodin or sleeping pill abuse.
The first time I saw Heath Ledger, is by accident. My date and later to be husband, Nick, took me to see "The Sixth Sense, finally succumbing to peer pressure to guess the" surprise ending ". At Currently, "The Sixth Sense" was off the circuit of major theater chain and the screening only in small theaters suburban independent, which led us to meet one of these rare events today: a double-feature matinee. The first film was '10 I Hate About You Things.
Well past "teen" movies, even those with scripts based on Shakespeare, we timidly confessed to loving "'10 Things. Wow, I really like the male lead, what was his name?" He is Australian, you know, "replied Nick. And in typical Aussie-fashion, I was doubly impressed and now stupidly filled with national pride. Another brilliant Australian up-and-comer is join the queue increases rapidly with the screens of Hollywood.
Years later, I often refer to the DVDs to fill a dull afternoon and I find myself watching and rewinding the same scene. Again and again and again. My secret guilty pleasure. Heath slide the pole microphone in hand, singing "You're too good to be true, can not take my eyes off you …" The band comes in. And this challenge charming half-race, half-prancing through the school steps. The scene is brilliant. It's inexplicable. He simply this factor to the old 'it'. I'm not a fan Star-struck and has never been one of those teenagers with movie-star idol posters all over the walls of my room, but this kid's Got Talent.
And then came those scene stealing roles that totally blew us. The Patriot. Monster's Ball. And finally the front-man status and an Oscar nomination. At today, we were accustomed to having another famous Australian up there with the rest of the world's great talent churning to an infinite variety, but roles in the film illustrates.
We had no idea. It was not inexhaustible. It ended January 22, 2008.
When the people I never met but greatly admire die, I'm sad. But I never cried before. I never felt that heart wrenching overwhelming shock that lasted for days after I heard the news. This time it was somehow more personal. When I read the detailed list of the first report of his deathbed scene, I intuitively knew how he died.
Ten days later, the report final medical examiner confirmed my suspicions.
Hollywood is "Xanax city. Feeling down, skip a Xanax. Feeling stressed, skip a Xanax. Need to do your best, Skip Xanax. A list of stars feel the pressure to supply Class A performance when working on several million movies. There is too much money at stake intense stress, both internal and external, is immeasurable. The studios are risking billions, paying the million stars and actors are naturally subjected to more pressure than us mere mortals can imagine.
Heath Ledger, himself, has acknowledged after the worldwide release of "A Knight's Tale" with its instant paparazzi-bulb flashing celebrity, his stress level increased tenfold.
Xanax is the brand name of the prescription drug generic anti-anxiety/tranquilliser, alprazolam, listed in the toxicity Ledger report. The other anti-anxiety drug was diazepam, or more commonly known as Valium. These drugs are of a class of tranquilizers often called benzodiazepines prescribed or simply called benzos.
According to the latest national survey on health, about 10 million scripts of benzos are written each year in Australia alone with its population of 20 million meager compared to 300 million U.S.. Many doctors write a script for benzos faster than the speed of a bullet. But the real danger is that too many of them do not know the long-term effects of these drugs your system, how to give their patients the correct advice when administering or monitoring the dosage, and – more worryingly – how to manage the program of their patients benzo withdrawal.
First, Thus benzos affect your body – or, more importantly – your brain. increased benzodiazepine or rather, improve your main neurotransmitter in the brain, commonly called GABA. Finally, and this can be as fast as 3 to 4 weeks if you take one dose daily, your brain will stop producing its own GABA and depend totally on the artificial benzo.
The neurotransmitter GABA is the most important because it affects almost everything else. Mainly it improves other brain neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. All neurotransmitters in the brain have important functions such as voluntary muscle movements, arousal, sleep, memory, sensory processing – Particularly pain, and much, much more.
The problem is that from this point on your brain needs more benzo as tolerance starts the spiral downward, and the brain needs more and larger doses to achieve the same effect. If the patient does not receive the correct dose of advice or management, insidious and often undiagnosed disorder called benzo withdrawal syndrome (BWS) will start its descent and potentially dangerous ugly.
BWS is known by experts in the field of its severity and protracted nature. It may take years to fully withdraw from benzos, even with care and supervision. Without this knowledge, the unconscious patient may experience symptoms of more than 30, the most common is insomnia relentless, severe pain and mood changes. People who have taken benzos for a relatively short time can experience withdrawal symptoms even when taking the drug. In addition, if you have been taken for a prolonged period and then suddenly stopping, severe symptoms occur. Or, at least, more pain, more depression and insomnia relentless.
When we read about Heath Ledger's complaints about his incessant insomnia and possesseion strong painkillers, does this sound familiar? Everything leads to the extreme benzo withdrawal, but nobody is crying dangers. In Indeed, most general practitioners and hospital doctors even admit they know very little about Benzo withdrawal. Some even suggest patients to rehabilitation centers for addicts – an absolute no-no according to advisers benzo. Benzo withdrawal is the exact opposite, or alcohol dependence to street drugs. You do not suddenly remove benzo from your body, as they often do in detoxification. The brain needs the benzo. We must withdraw progressively from the artificial benzo until the brain can eventually increase its own GABA. sudden cessation of benzos can cause serious problems such as seizures and blackouts.
In cases of BWS, trained counselors advise against taking any medicine or drug that either. Paracetamol is probably the only thing the body can cope with pain relief. Nothing else. Although codeine is prohibited. Also, it is imperative abstain from alcohol, caffeine, and all stimulants. There is a protocol to be strong and without this knowledge, the patient is easily jeopardized.
The manual Ashton benzodiazepine acknowledged 'bible', warns:
"Drug Interactions: Benzodiazepines have additive effects with other sedative drugs, including actions with other hypnotics, some antidepressants, major tranquilizers or neuroleptics, trifluoperazine, anticonvulsants, carbamazepine, antihistamines, promethazine, opiates (heroin, morphine, meperidine), and, most importantly, alcohol. Patients taking benzodiazepines should be warned of these interactions. If sedatives are taken in overdose, Benzodiazepines may increase the risk of fatality. "
The real problem is that there are very few experts in the treatment of BWS, they does not include your doctor, hospital or clinic for medicines. However, there are specialists BWS property that can be extremely useful, but they are usually found in specially funded clinical recovery tranquilizer.
One must ask, why do not doctors know this? The problem is that they simply do not. Is it their fault or the pharmaceutical companies that profit from these addictions? Few or no dissemination of information within the community, the medical fraternity and the pharmaceutical industry on benzodiazepines. And, according BWS advisers working in the field, there is insufficient research or empirical studies on the effects of benzos and BWS management to assist them in their workloads intensive.
Why? Whose fault? Who is responsible for remedying the situation? Why do people who write scripts misinformed about the consequences and the potential dangers associated with benzodiazepines?
Death may our beloved Heath Ledger will be at least one catalyst that will draw this devastating travesty to the attention of the public to request more information?
I hope so.
